Changing PathWays Groups
In an effort to break the cycle of family violence, we provide a treatment program for men or women who are, or have been, abusive to their partners. The goal is to stop the abuse and to help clients develop skills to build relationships based on equality and mutual respect. The program is offered in two phases.
Phase I
This is a psycho-educational group that is offered in a 12-week, 2.5 hours per week for a total of 30 hours. The clients are taught how to recognize their abusive actions, to take responsibility for them, and to start making positive changes in their attitude and behaviour. Two counsellors, usually one male and one female, facilitate the groups.
Phase I Client Referral Criteria
An appropriate client referral for Phase I meets these criteria:
- Is male or female, over 18 years of age
- Is, or has been, abusive to his/her partner
- Acknowledges he/she has a problem and is motivated to change
- Does not have an unaddressed substance abuse problem
- Does not have severe mental health issues
Before individuals are admitted to the group, they must complete an intake interview to discuss their situation and to be assessed regarding their suitability for the program.
The client can schedule this interview by calling 780-439-4635 ext. 100.
Clients receiving counselling elsewhere should discuss this program with their counsellor before registering.
Partner Services
