Welcome to Changing Ways, a program offered through the Edmonton Family Violence Centre (EFVC). This section is for professionals whose clients may benefit from accessing our programs.
In this section you will find information about our programs, our Phase I client referral criteria, and access to links and sources about family violence.
Changing Ways
In an effort to break the cycle of family violence, we provide a counselling program for men who are, or have been, abusive to their female partners. The goal is to stop the abuse and to help men develop skills to build relationships based on equality and mutual respect. The program is offered in two phases.
Phase I
This is a 16-week psycho-educational group. Each session runs for two hours, one weekday evening per week. The men are taught how to recognize their abusive actions, to take responsibility for them, and to start making positive changes in their attitude and behaviour. Two therapists, one male and one female, facilitate the groups.
Phase II
Completing Phase I is a requirement for men to attend this group. Phase II focuses on maintenance. It is an on-going group based on a mutual support model. Regular participation in Phase II is strongly recommended to increase the likelihood of the men making positive changes that will last over time. Two therapists facilitate this group as well.
Phase I Client Referral Criteria
An appropriate client referral for Phase I meets these criteria:
- Is male, over 18 years of age
- Is, or has been, abusive to his female partner
- Acknowledges he has a problem and is motivated to change
- Does not have an unaddressed substance abuse problem
- Does not have severe mental health issues
Before individuals are admitted to the group, they must complete an intake interview to discuss their situation and to be assessed regarding their suitability for the program.
The client can schedule this interview by calling 780-439-4635 ext. 222. between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday.
Men who attend Phase I have access to a Men's Parenting workshop and the Phase II group.
Men receiving counselling elsewhere should discuss this program with their counsellor before registering for it.
Men's Parenting
This is a full-day workshop where men can learn how family violence affects children and how to develop parenting skills that promote healthy relationships with their children in a safe family setting.
Partner Services
The female partners of men attending either Phase I or Phase II of Changing Ways are invited to get information about the programs and referrals to community resources for themselves and their children by calling Susan at 780-439-4635 ext 224.
Services are provided to former partners as well as current partners.
